Before Heaven and Hell: The Four Hollows of the Book of Enoch

by catharine j anderson

I was watching YouTube videos about the book of Enoch. A concept related to four holes caught my attention. These explain what happens to us after death. The Bible neglects these and religions came up with heaven and hell instead.

In the old text, Enoch gets walked out to a dark mountain made of hard rock. Deep inside it are four hollow places. These are pits carved into the stone. No clouds, no golden gates, no lakes of fire with pitchforks. Just four distinct waiting rooms cut into the mountain where souls end up the second the breath leaves the body.

The rules here are blunt. You die, go into the rock, and sit in your assigned hole until judgment day. There is no reincarnation here. No spinning the wheel again to get it right next time, no coming back in a fresh body to settle old debts. The clock just stops.

The first hole holds a spring of clear, bright water. The people inside sit by the water in the quiet, breathing easy after the long haul of living. They lived upright lives, suffered their share, and died. Now they rest in the light while the world outside keeps turning.

Then comes the second room. This one built for the ones who got away with it. They lived high, ate well, stepped on whoever they had to, and died peacefully in warm beds without ever answering for a thing. No court caught them. No disease brought them down. They thought they beat the house, but they land straight in the dark where they are bound in great pain, and the debt stays unpaid until the end.

The third hole is loud. It belongs to the victims. The murdered, the betrayed, the ones cut down in cold blood while someone else walked away clean. They do not sit in quiet reflection. They scream. Their voices carry up out of the stone, shouting the names of the ones who struck them down, demanding that the scales get balanced. They sit in the dark and yell for justice until the whole place shakes.

The fourth room holds the rest of us. The ones who broke rules, caused harm, and took their hits while their feet were still on the ground. They bled for their mistakes in real time, scraping their knuckles raw against the everyday dirt of living. Now they sit in a separate corner of the rock. Not cleared, not condemned, just sitting still in the shadows.

We like simple answers because the alternative feels like staring into a dark, bottomless abyss. We long for an afterlife of perfect, orderly justice. Heaven for the saints, hell for the monsters. But the old story leaves you sitting in a cold room in the rocks, waiting for the judge to walk through the door.
